Casserole Dyeing Past & Present

Seats available

Instructor: Jane Holden, Nova Scotia

So many possibilities – and all in two days! Think glorious skies and wondrous water. Think beautiful wool for a stained glass mat. There are so many more techniques than just spot dyes. Most processing will be done in an oven using a casserole and direct application of dyes. The workshop will allow time to dye one to two yards of wool fabric and/or several skeins of wool yarn. Dye for a project, for your stash, or for your friends!

Cheticamp Style Coasters and Eyeglass Case

Seats available

Instructor: Susan Doyle, Nova Scotia

Using Geometric Cheticamp designs (choice of 3) and traditional Cheticamp yarn, students will hook 4” x 4” mug rugs then learn how to apply  these designs towards a mat or runner. You will learn how to hook these designs without having the pattern drawn on your backing. This way of hooking is very detailed and requires focus on design. It’s amazing to see your colour plan come to life, very rewarding. The second weekend will feature instruction on the Cheticamp Designs and traditional yarn of a five petal flower, bird, boat or your own design on an eyeglass case. Minimal hand-stitching is required to finish this project. Kits for both projects will be available at additional cost.

Eye of the Beholder

Class is full

Instructor: Pam Bartlett, NH

Owls and their eyes are fascinating. Their wise and intense gaze will have you “en-raptured”. The points learned in this class can be applied to future projects with eyes, helping you to see the things you need to do. The class project is 12” x 12” with just one eye so you can really focus on the eye. Special attention will be given to the reflections in the eye, as well as the depth, intensity, and dimension of the eye, which will give it the life and brilliance these noble birds deserve. Warning: fine cuts will be employed for the critical areas, but we will be able to use wider cuts creatively with textures along with yarns and other fibres to create the illusion of feathers. Fun facts will be shared while hooking our feathered
friends.

Fine Shaded Vegetables & Fruit

Class is full

Instructor: Mary Grant, New Brunswick

Looking for a tried and true workshop on shading? Here it is! Explore highlights and shadows using 6 or 8 value swatches of wool, flannel or yarn, as well as textures, to make your motifs come to life. Most fruit and vegetables are variations on a circle – elongated, squashed, stacked, or dimpled – whether a zucchini, tomato, pear, or orange. A discussion of the adaptation of the round shape along with the placement of highlights and shadow will help make your chosen fruit or vegetables achieve a lifelike appearance. Contour hooking and other techniques will be used and check-ins between classes will keep everyone on track via personal feedback. Detailed handouts are provided.
